The terms "bespoke" and "made-to-measure" are often used interchangeably, but they represent fundamentally different approaches to tailoring. Understanding the distinction will help you make an informed investment in your wardrobe.
What Is Made-to-Measure?
Made-to-measure starts with a pre-existing pattern that is adjusted based on your measurements. The garment is cut from a standard template, with modifications made to accommodate your body. This approach is faster and less expensive than bespoke, but the fit is limited by the base pattern.
What Is Bespoke?
True bespoke tailoring creates a completely new pattern from scratch for each client. Every aspect of the garment — from the shoulder construction to the chest piece — is built to your unique body shape, posture, and proportions. There is no base pattern; your garment is truly one of a kind.
The Fitting Process
Made-to-measure typically involves one fitting, sometimes none. Bespoke requires multiple fittings — usually two to three — where the tailor refines the garment on your body. This iterative process is what creates the exceptional fit that bespoke is known for.
Construction Quality
Bespoke garments feature hand-stitched details throughout: hand-padded lapels, hand-sewn buttonholes, and a floating canvas chest piece. These techniques allow the garment to mold to your body over time, improving with wear.
The Limatus Approach
At Limatus Bespoke, every garment we create is truly bespoke. We never start with a pre-made pattern. Your pattern is drafted from your measurements and kept on file for future commissions. Visit our Raleigh showroom to experience the difference.
